    1881-1916

    Born in 1881. His commitment to the Gaelic League and his interest in Irish language and music drew Ceannt into contact with Pearse and other leaders of the national movement. He joined the Irish Volunteers on their formation and as a member of the Military Council was involved in the plans for the Rising at an early stage. Ceannt was in command at the South Dublin Union during the Rising and distinguished himself for bravery and coolness in action. He was executed on 8th May, 1916.

    Born in 1887. Plunkett was the youngest of the signatories of the Proclamation. A poet of distinction and a close associate of Thomas Mac Donagh, with whom he founded the Irish Theatre, Plunkett devoted himself unsparingly to the independence movement. He was a founder member of the Irish Volunteers and the military plans for the Rising are believed to have been largely his work. He left his sick bed to take part in the fighting in the General Post Office. He was executed on 4th May 1916.

    Born in 1884, Mac Diarmada, early in life, joined the Gaelic League and other national organisations. His flair as an organiser showed itself in his work with Thomas Clarke in re-vitalising the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and later, despite a physical handicap, in contributing to the spread throughout Ireland of the Irish volunteers which he had helped to found. A member of the Military Council which planned the Rising, he fought in the General Post Office. He was executed on 12th May, 1916.

    Born in 1878, Mac Donagh, poet, critic and dramatist, shared the political and cultural ideals of Padraig Pearse with whom he taught in St. Endas school, Rathfarnham. He was Director of Training of the Irish Volunteers and, as Commandment of the Dublin Brigade, held Jacobs factory during the Rising. He was executed 3rd May, 1916.

    The first signatory of the 1916 Proclamation was Thomas Clarke. A member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood since 1878, he formed a military committee in 1915 to plan a rebellion.

    Clarke fought in the GPO throughout Easter week. He was executed by firing squad on May 3rd at the age of 59.

    A Scottish-born socialist and Trade Union activist, Connolly co-founded the Irish Citizen Army to defend workers’ rights after the 1913 Lockout.

    He was one of the seven signatories to the Proclamation of Independence and was military commander in charge of the GPO Garrison.

    In Kilmainham Gaol on May 12th he was executed while strapped to a chair due to injuries he sustained in the Rising.

    Born in 1868, Markievicz was the only female leader of the Rising.

    Georgine Goore-Booth took her name from her 1900 marriage to the Polish Count Casimir Markievicz. She joined Sinn Féin and, in 1909, founded Fianna Éireann (a nationalist scouts movement).

    As a member of the Irish Citizen Army she was second in command of the rebels’ Stephens’ Green Garrison.

    Aide-de-Camp to Count Plunkett in the GPO, Collins fought alongside Padraig Pearse and James Connolly.

    Collins later became Irish Republican Brotherhood President and Minister for Finance for the First Dáil (Irish parliament) in 1919.

    Collins played a main role in the War of Independence (1919 – 1921) and was Chairman of the new Irish Free State Provisional Government. He was head of the Irish army when shot by Anti-Treaty forces at Baile na mBláith, Co. Cork in 1922.

    Born in 1879, Pearse dedicated himself to the ideal of an Independent Irish-speaking nation and his writings and speeches played an important part in the revival of the national spirit.

    In the Rising, he was President of the Provisional Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Irish Forces.

    On Easter Monday, Pearse read the Proclamation of Independence in front of the GPO (General Post Office). He was executed on 30th May, 1916.
